Their bats were silent and Great Lakes had a rookie on the mound. No problem.

On a day when the Loons struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 23-year-old starter Mark Matthews. The left-hander quieted the Peoria Chiefs at Dow Diamond to help Great Lakes take the 3-1 decision and seize a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-7 Round 2.

Adam Tudor helped his team take an early lead with a 2-run double. It came in the first inning, making the score 2-0, Loons.

"Mark gave us a really strong effort," said Great Lakes manager Ivan Cruz.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Dow Diamond in Midland.
