Many baseball pundits expected a close series in the Gulf Coast Rookie League Round 1. It turned out quite a bit different.


The St. Louis (GCL) Cardinals swept aside the Tampa Bay (GCL) Rays to advance to the Round 2, winning the final game by a 8-5 score at Louisville Grounds.

The series MVP was center fielder Bill Hoyt, who hit .462 with a .462 on-base percentage. He had 2 home runs, drove in 6 RBI and scored 2 runs.

"We expected this series to go right down to the wire, so to sweep is a bit of a surprise," he said. "But we'll take it."

The St. Louis (GCL) Cardinals don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the Pittsburgh (GCL) Pirates - Houston (GCL) Astros series. Pittsburgh (GCL) leads the series 2 games to 0. The Round 2 schedule will be announced after the Round 1 finishes.
