The Chicago Cubs powered past the hometown San Diego Padres, 4-2, in the opener of the Wild Card at The Pound at Seaport Village. Chicago starting pitcher Brian Martinko threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Cubs now lead the series 1-0.

Chicago used the hitting of Jimmy Esposito to pick up the win. The second baseman clubbed a run-scoring single in the top of the third inning to put the Cubs on top, 3-1. For the game, Esposito had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"I went out and just tried to do my job," said Martinko.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
