The 2108 season did not get off to quite the start the Pawtucket Red Sox had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Syracuse Chiefs at McCoy Stadium. The final score was 3-0. Starting Pitcher Erik McFadden was the top performer for Syracuse.

Syracuse used a timely hit from Daniel Ortiz to get the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to put the Chiefs ahead, 1-0. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a difference-maker.

"Erik is good at sticking to his strengths," said Syracuse manager Mark Holgate.
