The Sacramento River Cats topped the Tacoma Rainiers, 3-0, in Pacific Conference action at Cheney Stadium. The standout performance belonged to Sacramento pitcher and Alameda, California, native Gene Jones. Jones got the win, improving to 1-0. He gave up 4 hits and walked 3 over 7.2 innings. He allowed no runs. Yohsuke Otake earned the save for Sacramento.

Joey Tolar had a big 2-run home run for the River Cats in the top of the sixth inning. With Sacramento leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a fastball from 23-year old left-handed pitcher Tyler Crumley and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the River Cats on top, 3-0.

"Anything I can do to help the team win," said Tolar.

The loss drops Tacoma to 0-3.
