Gwinnett got a decent performance from pitcher Tim Hall, but it wasn't enough to beat the Charlotte Knights. Charlotte won the Coolray Field contest, 5-4. Hall threw 8.0 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. The winner was Danny Torres in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Roland Carroll took the loss. Bill Romero earned the save for Charlotte.

Jeremy Rice came through with a big-time hit for Charlotte. The designated hitter smacked a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give his team the lead, 5-4. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Charlotte manager Nick Zlomke.

Charlotte sits at 5-1.
