Pitching was the name of the game in a tight contest between the Iowa Cubs and the El Paso Chihuahuas. Iowa won it, 2-1. Iowa starter Brian Martinko was in command. The winner was David Joplin in relief. His record improves to 7-8. Josh Beckmann took the loss. Iowa is now 55-54.

Iowa used the timely hitting of Joe Stephens to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Cubs on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We came out on the wrong end of this one," said El Paso skipper Matt Pace.
