The Sacramento River Cats could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Ryan DiPonio into a win. Instead, the Fresno Grizzlies prevailed, 6-5. DiPonio threw 7.0 innings of 2-hit ball. Marco Nunez came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings. His record now stands at 1-0. Cory Lankford got the save, the 15th for him this season.

The Grizzlies beat the River Cats in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Pat Wood produced in the bottom of the eighth. Batting against Jason Cranford, Wood gave his team the lead, 6-5, when he hit a run-scoring single.

Said Fresno manager Mike Gibson: "At the end of the day, these guys have to perform between the lines, and I think they did."

The first-place Grizzlies have a one-game lead in their division.
