Syracuse Chiefs starter Alvin Mendez pitched effectively against the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park. The left-hander spearheaded his team's 5-4 win. Mendez got the win, improving to 2-1. He allowed 7 hits and walked 2 over 7 innings. Mendez allowed 4 runs. John Short finished the game for Syracuse and earned his 1st save.

Syracuse used a well-timed hit by Alan Cecil to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Chiefs ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 5 at-bats, it was important.

"We found a way to get it done," Mendez said.

The Tides drop to 9-11 and continue their mediocre start to the 2098 season.
