The Indianapolis Indians got a strong performance from pitcher Bill Gourd, who stymied the Syracuse offense en route to a win, 3-2, at Victory Field. Gourd, now 4-2, was the winner. In 5 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 2, walking 0, and allowing 2 runs. Pat Utterback picked up the save for Indianapolis, his 20th of the year.

Making an impact for the home team was Kevin Wallace. In the bottom of the fourth, the 24-year old first baseman had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. That made the score 3-1, Indians.

"Scoring runs is scoring runs," said Indianapolis skipper John LaRossa. "It's important to have different ways to do it."

At 68-53, the Indians claim first place in the West Division.
