Indianapolis and Gwinnett played a hard-fought contest.

The bats were silent much of the day at Coolray Field. But Santos Vazquez conjured up just enough offense to carry the Indians past the Gwinnett Braves, 3-1. Vazquez went 4 for 4 with a home run and 3 singles. Indianapolis pitcher Bill Gourd got the win, upping his record to 5-2. David Hedblom got the loss.

Indianapolis took a 3-1 lead on Vazquez's 14th home run of the season. The solo home run, which he hit off Mark Weeks in the top of the eighth, propelled Indianapolis to the win.

"We'll savor this win," Vazquez told the Indianapolis Citizen, "then get ready for the next game."

The first-place Indians, at 71-55, now lead their division by 4½ games.
