Black Bears Get Nifty 5-3 Win
|
Fans of the West Virginia Black Bears who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a West Virginia win over the visiting Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 5-3. Jeff Rice started for the home team against Mario Pera. Mario Pera earned accolades for his performance. The win went to Patrick Moore in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Danny Cruz took the loss.
West Virginia took a 5-3 lead on Jerry Williams's 1st double of the season. The 2-run double, which Williams hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Mahoning Valley pitcher Danny Cruz visibly frustrated.
"Win or lose, we always try to grind it out and stay even-keeled," Williams said in reaction to the win.
