Darryl Shirey of the Toledo Mud Hens was on top of his game.

The 23-year-old tantalized the Columbus Clippers with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.

"He had the changeup working," Columbus manager Dan Goldthwaite said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Toledo hurler had 8 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Shirey told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

To date this season, Shirey sports a 3-1 mark with a 1.97 ERA in 6 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .217 batting average and has 34 strikeouts in 45.2 innings.
