Sea Dogs Lose Late, 5-2
|
The rain did not keep Richmond and Portland from finishing their game.
The Portland Sea Dogs got a sterling performance from pitcher Jayden Banks, but the Richmond Flying Squirrels still prevailed, 5-2. Banks threw 5.1 innings of 4-hit ball. Richmond reliever Kyle Norris was the winner. His record is now 12-1. The losing pitcher was Juan Cortez.
The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Nawaf Shafeeq came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Portland pitcher Bobby Bowers, he hit a 2-2 fastball for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Richmond on top, 4-2.
"We'll enjoy this win," said Shafeeq. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
At 75-51, the Flying Squirrels find themselves in third place in the Northern Division.
