Crowds lined up early in front of Hadlock Field, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2111 Eastern League season. On the mound was Josh Smith for the visiting Trenton Thunder and Mike Shearer for the hometown Portland Sea Dogs. In a spirited contest, the Sea Dogs pulled out the win, defeating the Thunder by the score of 2-1. Especially impressive was Mike Shearer. Shearer picked up the win for Portland, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0. Tom Mooney finished to wrap up his 1st save.

Dave Gonzales had a critical at-bat with two out in the bottom of the seventh for Portland. He came through with a run-scoring single to put Portland in front, 2-0.

"It'd be nice to win by four or five runs," Shearer said, "instead of holding our breath the whole game."
