Cardinals Reel In 8-7 Win
|
Eduard Brandt did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the Arkansas Travelers from being beaten, 8-7, to the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field. Brandt was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. The winning pitcher was 25-year old right-handed pitcher Mike McKim. He tossed 111 pitches over 7.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Chuck Bannon was called on to finish, recording his 7th save.
In the bottom of the fourth, Springfield right fielder Jose Martinez had a run-producing at-bat. Facing Arkansas hurler Andrew Williams, Martinez grounded out, driving in 1 run. That made the score 5-3, Springfield. For the day, Martinez was 2-4 with 2 singles. He scored 2 runs.
"I like to lead by example," said Martinez. "I'm glad I could contribute to a good win."
The second-place Cardinals now sit at 54-55.
