Salem beat Winston-Salem on the strength of starting pitcher Danny Godfrey's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 3-2. The win went to Elliott Wilgus in relief. His record improves to 3-2. Mark Ayers took the loss. After today's action, Salem sits at 22-22; Winston-Salem slips to 23-21.
The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Nick Sheets came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Winston-Salem pitcher Mark Ayers, he hit a 1-2 slider for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Salem on top, 3-2.
"I just tried to attack the bottom of the zone," Godfrey said.
