Fans were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown Salem Red Sox take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks rode a solid performance from 23-year-old starting pitcher Ricky Lopez to a win, beating the Salem Red Sox, 5-0, at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Lopez got the win, improving to 9-8. He gave up 2 hits and walked 2 over 5 innings. He allowed no runs.
Wilmington used a well-timed hit by Luke Wilson to capture the win. The third baseman socked a 2-run double in the top of the third inning to put the Blue Rocks ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
"Ricky kept his poise and got the job done," said Wilmington manager Bobby Clontz. "He was outstanding."
Wilmington sits in last place in the Northern Division at 63-72.
