Palm Beach Cardinals starter Ricky Fifield was in the groove. He led his team to a win over the Clearwater Threshers, 3-2. Fifield, the winner, moves to 7-4. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 5 and giving up 1 walk. Ross Hall was credited with the save for Palm Beach, his 12th of the season.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Cardinals had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the second, when second baseman Pat Pinkham hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Mike Troxel and made the score 2-0, Cardinals. Pinkham went 1-4.
Palm Beach manager Greg Cary commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."
The first-place Cardinals lifted their record to 49-33.
