The Charlotte Stone Crabs beat the Palm Beach Cardinals by a score of 7-6. Charlotte third baseman Mike Herrington deserved the lion's share of the credit. Herrington was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk for the Stone Crabs. The second-place Cardinals now sit at 66-39.

The decisive blow was delivered by Dave Jones in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a solo home run off 23-year old right-handed pitcher Chris Oliver to win the game for Charlotte. The home crowd went nuts.

"This place was jumping at the end," Jones said.
