Spikes Pull Out Late-Game Win, 3-2
|
In a tight contest between the State College Spikes and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Jamie Ward was the determining factor. The State College right-hander sparkled in his team's 3-2 win. The winner in relief was Bobby Hunley. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. He now owns a record of 2-0. The loss drops Mahoning Valley to 3-2.
Had Steve Gass not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Gass hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Spikes.
"When Jamie is on, he can really move the ball around," said State College manager Matthew Lucas.
