Kernels Sneak Past Chiefs, 2-1
|
Pitching was the name of the game in a tight contest between the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Peoria Chiefs. Cedar Rapids won it, 2-1. Cedar Rapids starter Chris Gurr was in command. The winner was Miguel Toscano in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Javy Villarreal took the loss. After losing, Peoria is 1-5.
Branco Martijn was the walk-off hero for Cedar Rapids. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Kernels shortstop hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"It was bedlam at the end," Martijn said.
