Welde Leads Cubs to 7-4 Win Over Lugnuts
|
The 3-RBI night of designated hitter Peter Welde helped the South Bend Cubs triumph, 7-4, over the Lansing Lugnuts. Jeremy Hovis, the winner, improved to 2-2. He held the Lugnuts to 4 runs on 5 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 9 and walking 1. Picking up the save was Ryan LaBrasca, his 5th.
Welde had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the sixth. On a 2-2 sinker from Jose Rios, he banged a 3-run home run to right-center, giving the Cubs a 6-4 lead. It was the 1st home run of the year for Welde.
"It's not about individual awards," Welde told a South Bend Observer reporter after the game. "It's about winning championships. That's what we play for."
Lansing now has a record of 5-13.
