Floundering Loons Lose 6th Straight

The South Bend Cubs had to overcome a fine effort from Great Lakes pitcher Joe Lee to win, 6-4, at Dow Diamond. Lee went 7 innings and allowed 3 runs. Fernando Ramos picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-2. Justin Tieken was tagged with the loss. Ryan LaBrasca recorded his 14th save for South Bend.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Peter Welde came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Great Lakes pitcher Justin Tieken, he hit a 1-2 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting South Bend on top, 5-4.
"Being able to play a game for a living is one thing. Being able to play it well and contribute to a win is even better," Welde told the South Bend Observer.
The Cubs now have a record of 31-31.
