Stirling Lifts Cubs to 6-5 Triumph
|
Behind the hitting of Phil Stirling, the South Bend Cubs defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-5. Stirling was 3 for 3 with a home run, a double, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 4 runs and scored once for the Cubs. Fernan Lameiras picked up the win in relief for South Bend, while Steve Exner took the loss. Picking up his 15th save was 22-year old right-handed pitcher Ryan LaBrasca.
Had Stirling not come through in the bottom of the seventh, who knows how the game would've ended? But with two down, Stirling hit a grand slam home run. The Cubs took the lead, 6-5, and never looked back.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said West Michigan manager Noah Fourie. "But we decided not to take it."
The Cubs raised their record to 33-33.
