The Great Lakes Loons could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Mike Norman into a win. Instead, the South Bend Cubs prevailed, 6-3. Norman threw 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball. The win was credited to Bill Chavez in relief. His record improves to 4-5. Mike Norman took the loss. Jaheim Peters got credit for the save for South Bend. It was his 3rd of the year.

Brooklyn, New York-born Lorenzo Machuca came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the seventh, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Cubs trailing 2-1, he hit a 2-run single to left to put South Bend on top.

"I'm not out there for personal accomplishments," Machuca told a South Bend Today reporter after the game. "I'm out there to help the team win, and that's what we did today."

The 7th-place Cubs sport a record of 49-59.
