The 8-6 South Bend win over Great Lakes was due largely to Teruaki Kanai. The Cubs first baseman was 2-3 with 2 singles and a walk, while scoring 3 runs. The winner was South Bend reliever Rich Urbina, now 5-6. The loser was Alfonso Romero. South Bend currently is in first place in the Eastern Division at 73-36.

Had Ken Lynch not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Lynch hit a 2-run double. That made the score 8-6, in favor of the Cubs.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Lynch. "And not try to do too much."
