Captains Go Down to Defeat, 3-2
|
In a close game at Fifth Third Ballpark, the West Michigan Whitecaps edged the Lake County Captains, 3-2. West Michigan right fielder Chris Snider stood apart with his performance. He went 3-3 with 3 singles. Paul Crane got credit for the win, improving to 2-3. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 3.2 innings. Willie Gutierrez picked up the save for West Michigan, his 2nd of the year.
Had Steve Schurman not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Schurman hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Whitecaps.
"We came out on the wrong end of this one," said Lake County skipper Garrett Holt.
The 5th-place Whitecaps lifted their record to 59-60.
