International League Top Hurler Announced Wednesday, October 9th , 2109 The Louisville Bats have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Mel Valdez, this year's International League Pitcher of the Year Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Valdez compiled a 17-8 record in 29 starts, tallied 205 strikeouts in 208.2 innings and recorded a 2.98 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .247 batting average against him. He received 14 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Brian Groeschen of the Norfolk Tides finished second in voting, while Larry Coyle of the Buffalo Bisons finished third.
