He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Mike Mars performed like a veteran on the hill for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and walked away with the Northwest League Pitcher of the Year Award in the process.

The 22-year-old Volcanoes star fashioned a 10-2 won-loss record in 2110 with a 1.15 ERA. In 109.1 innings of work and 16 starts, Mars struck out 108 while giving up 69 hits and 19 walks. He held opposing batters to a .177 average.

He received 15 first place votes out of a possible 16. Jhoandry Moore of the Vancouver Canadians finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Raul Monge of the Los Angeles N (SS-A) Dodgers finished third.
